High
adjustment speed to changes in light conditions is therefore at the top of the
wish list for users of self tinting lenses, as shown by an extensive market
study commissioned by Carl Zeiss Vision. In the survey, which was carried out
in 2010 during spring and summer, 5,896 glasses wearers from Germany, Italy,
Great Britain, the USA, Brazil, Australia and China gave an exact profile of
their needs, preferences and opinions.
The study
revealed a significant level of interest in self-tinting lenses: 53% of all
glasses wearers knew about self-tinting lenses, while 20% were already using
them. 94% of the users said they would buy self-tinting lenses again.
The
photoactive colour molecules are complex chemical compounds that alter their
structure and form when exposed to UV light. The lens forms the matrix through
which the colour molecules are evenly distributed. When exposed to sunlight,
the photoactive colour molecules depart from their normal structure, opening up
and forming new bonds between moieties. This enables the colour molecules to
absorb light and tint the lens so that it becomes darker. At times and in
places where there is no UV radiation, like at night or indoors, the colour
molecules return to their original structure and the lens becomes clear. The
key factor required for the tinting to work properly is that the molecules have
sufficient space in the matrix to alter their form and structure quickly.
During development, we managed to find a matrix that perfectly accommodates the
colour molecules. This is the only way to ensure that they have enough space to
enable the lenses to tint and clear again very quickly when the light
conditions change.

There is little material residue with only minimal air pollution and no water
contamination. In addition, no highly toxic materials are used and there is
only low exposure to solvents, preventing unnecessary pollution of the
atmosphere.
Our investment in new curing techniques and Systems are based on the use of low
temperatures and short throughput tlmes. ensuring energy is used very sparingly
and consumption reduced to a very low level.
Efficiency is also a top priority for our logistics processes: we have invested
a lot of energy into making all processes involved even more efficient with the
aim of saving on time, energy and packaging.
