Altimeters

Altimeters work on the same principle as the barometer and measure the weight of
the air column. Those with the best mechanism have an accuracy of 10 m. The
less precise instruments are accurate to within a range of 20 to 50 meters. Air
temperature plays a role in altitude measurement. Air density has a close relation
with temperature. When air temperature differs from the mean temperature,
one must correct the altitude: for every degree C. off, 4% of altitude must be
corrected. Therefore, when there are atmospheric changes every day or hour, one must
set the altimeter for a known altitude before a trip. This instrument is quite valuable to
find and recognize the ground in respect of the map.

Use as an altimeter
Before starting your climbing tour or hike, for instance, adjust the altitude
scale using the ribbed ring, until the needle shows the exact altitude of your location.
Exact altitudes can be found on maps, timetables, at railway stations, on hiking path
signs, etc. thereafter the altimeter plus barometer will show the correct height as you
climb up or downhill. Whenever you come to a point of known elevation, check the reading
and make any small correction that may prove necessary. This will adjust the instrument
for changes in weather conditions as you go along. The most accurate readings are obtained
by holding the
OPTI-TRECK horizontally and tapping the protective glass gently.
What is sometimes ridiculed as an obsession with gadgets or over-cautiousness,
has sometimes enabled people to get back safely to base, prevented accidents and even
saved lives in situations where human senses have failed, for example with the onset of
sudden bad weather, fog, snowstorms or darkness.
Use as a barometer or barometer memory
Using the ribbed ring, align the red line on the protective glass with the
indicating needle. The direction, extent and speed of the needle's movement in response to
changes in atmospheric pressure provide the user with valuable information about future
weather trends or changes. With the barometer scale, you can read absolute atmospheric
pressure (QFE) and atmospheric pressure reduced to sea-level (QNH).The barometer memory
facility enables you to store atmospheric readings, for example overnight or during a
break, without losing the information about altitude above sea-level. With the
OPTI-TRECK altimeter plus barometer, you are always one step ahead of traditional radio, TV
or newspaper weather forecasts. If you use
your altimeter plus barometer readings in conjunction with the rules of
meteorology, you will be able to forecast weather in your region or location far more
accurately than the media. As you will be able to distinguish between short and long-term
weather trends or changes, you will be in a position to plan your trips with care and have
the necessary information at your finger-tips during any excursion.

Movements of the capsule face generated by changes in atmospheric pressure are
amplified some 860 times by a high precision mechanical drive and precision balanced
indicating needle. All shafts are hardened and have rolled ends. 19 synthetic ruby
bearings with olive-cut holes are employed to ensure long friction-free life. No
lubricants are used, so you can count on superb performance even in the coldest climates.
All
optitreck products from aircraft instruments to industrial calibration standards are
world renowned for precision and durability. So also is the
optitreck altimeter
plus barometer. Each instrument is individually temperature compensated and calibrated by
a highly skilled technician using state-of-the-art mechanical and electronic test
equipment. No-compromise design and painstaking workmanship are followed by stringent
final quality testing to further assure each instrument a long trouble-free life. You can
always count on your
optitreck.
