Orthokeratology uses Contact Lenses to remould the Cornea, to reduce or correct
Myopic (short-sighted) and Astigmatic (irregular surface) errors of the eye.The
Cornea is highly elastic, and always returns to its original shape. For this
reason the lenses are worn nightly or on alternate nights after the ideal
Corneal shape has been achieved and removed in the morning giving perfect vision
without the need for spectacles or contact lenses.
Hard contact lenses
Hard contact lenses are made with hydrophobic plastic. They have a long life, need
little care and are not easily scratched. But they are not always very comfortable, daily
wearing time is short, they can be lost and problems may be caused by dust particles
getting under the lens.
Soft contact lenses
Soft contact lenses are made of plastic: half hydrophilic, half hydrophobic and need to
be hydrated constantly in order to remain soft. They are very comfortable, can be worn for
a long time, are suitable for violent sports and not easily lost. Soft contact lenses need
a great deal of care, otherwise they will have to be changed frequently. The average
renewal time is from of 2 to 3 years. We also have DISPOSABLE LENSES that are
renewed at intervals of one year, 6 months, 3 months, 1 month, 15 days or one day.

Gas permeable contact lenses
Gas permeable contact lenses are made of plastic. They are softer and more comfortable
to wear than hard lenses. They need care and are sensitive to scratches. Dust particles
under the lens can be a problem. These lenses have to be renewed every 3 to 4 years.
In conclusion, it is very important to disinfect contact lenses and
cases because the lenses may be a vector to infection. They need to be looked after with
great care and cleaned regularly. You should never change your cleaning products without
notifying your prescriber, some products not being compatible with each other or with
certain lenses. It is important to have regular checking carried out by a specialist who
will test the lenses and the condition of the eye. This should be done at least once a
year or if there are any unusual symptoms. Every type of contact lens should be fitted by
a specialist who will carry out the necessary tests in several stages to make sure that
you are fitted with the right lenses for your particular needs.

What's New :
UltraVision International has been awarded the CE mark for its Epicon
product, a special lens for keratoconic patients, due to be available in the UK
early in 2002.
Epicon is the vision-care industry's first disposable, flexible gas permeable
contact lens and is manufactured from UltraVision's new lens material,
Carbosilfocon. This is a water-free, biocompatible, high-oxygen permeable
material originally developed for heart and lung surgery.
Bridging the gap between RGP and soft contact lenses, the new polymer has been
developed to provide comfort and stability combined with corneal health.
According to UltraVision, Epicon will bring levels of comfort similar to
disposable soft lenses but with the visual acuity and ocular health benefits of
RGP lenses.
SAM MULTIFOCALS
The first multifocal contact lenses using Contact Lens Precision
Laboratories' SAM (Spherical Aberration Management) technology have been well
received by contact lens practitioners.
The lenses for presbyopes benefit from design technology which defines all the
co-ordinates to sub- micron accuracy in order to calculate the power at every
point on the lens. The key feature of the technology is that it improves power
control regardless of the lens material. Patient benefits are greater definition
and visual acuity.
This revolutionary design can be altered according to the diameter of the pupil,
which maximizes suitability for wearers and the first-fit success rate. The SAM
lenses are available in all prescriptions and a wide range of materials.
SOLA AND CIBA VISION SEE EYE TO EYE
Ophthalmic lens supplier Sola Optical UK and contact lens manufacturer Ciba
Vision have joined forces to create an alliance aimed at helping opticians
upgrade their customers' lens choice. A four-month campaign from 1 November
offers customers who buy lenses from Sola's progressives range a free
three-month trial of Ciba's Focus Dailies disposable contact lenses. According
to Steve Wright, Sola's Commercial Director, the promotion "will enable
opticians to offer their customers a complete solution and encourage patients to
consider wearing a mixture of spectacles and contact lenses as part of their
lifestyle." Research suggests that only 2o/o of people aged between 45 and 55
wear contact lenses, and for the over-55s, the figure falls to just 1%.
Accordingly, there must be a significant untapped market here for contact
lenses.
Dan Hammond, Director of Lenses at Ciba Vision, said "Whereas contact lenses and
glasses have been traditionally seen as adversaries, our alliance turns this
thinking on its head. It means that we can work with optical practices on
building their whole business."
PLUS POWERS
Bausch & Lomb has recently launched Plus Powers, a new addition to the
Softens Comfort range. The addition allows a wider range of patients to use the
lenses. Until recently, far-sighted patients did not have the option of choosing
Softens Comfort, so this development will enable them to explore different
Bausch & Lomb products.

Colors contact lenses
If you've got it, enhance it. At least that is the premise Vision's FreshLook
Radiance illuminating monthly disposable contact lenses. First launched in Italy
this June, the lenses will be available across Europe from September onwards.
Hair colour, lip gloss and make-up are all tapping into the current trend
towards all that shimmers. CIBA Vision says FreshLook Radiance, which are
available as prescription and piano lenses, enhance and illuminate the eye's
natural colour, using a "pearlescent effect: The new modality comes in
Moonlight, Eden, Sunrise and Autumn versions for blue, green, hazel and dark
eyes respectively. The lenses are targeted mainly at women in their late teens
and 2Os, although the over- 30s have also shown an interest.
A recent VisionTrak survey of European consumer trends, conducted by market
information company Taylor Nelson Sofres, found that 3% of contact lens wearers
in Germany wear coloured contact lenses, that figure rising to 4O/o in France
and 5% in the UK. Those figures may still be low, but there is considerable
interest in such lenses among wearers and non-wearers of contact lenses alike.
Johnson & Johnson Vision Care is also launching a new range of coloured
contact lenses across Europe this September. Acuvue 2 Colours fortnightly
disposable contact lenses correct myopia from -0.50 to -6.00 dioptres. Piano
lenses are also available. The lenses are offered in seven different shades.
Opaque, designed for dark eyes, are available in blue, grey, green or honey.
Enhancers, which the company says are more suitable for light eye colours, are
offered in blue, aqua or green.
These lenses present a chance for opticians across Europe to enhance their
contact lens businesses - and not just the colour of their customers' eyes.
