SOFT CONTACT LENSES

Without Silicone

Soft contact lenses are available in two categories: hydrophobic and hydrophilic. Hydrophobic lenses have been practically abandoned since they tend to adhere to the eye, making them difficult to remove. This material (silicon) has a very high rate of gas permeability. Hydrophilic lenses are made from a sort of spongy material that allows the passage of water molecules, gas molecules being transported with the water molecules. Soft hydrophilic lenses are divided into those with low water content and with high water content. They are classic lenses or disposable lenses (also known as throwaway).

Classic hydrophilic lenses

Classic hydrophilic lenses are usually thick enough to avoid tearing. They have an average life of 1 to 2 years. They need to be looked after with great care to avoid deposits and clogging, otherwise these lenses may become like a plaster on the eye, leading to physiological problems resulting possibly in a pathological condition where contact wear has to be stopped.

Disposable lenses are thinner and their life time extends from 1 day to 10 days, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and one year. The more frequently they are replaced, the less care they need. There only remains the disinfecting process of lenses and carrying case. The more often the lenses are changed, the less likelihood there is of corneal physiological disturbance.

Hydrophilic soft contact lenses are very popular because they provide great comfort, adaptation being almost immediate. Violent sports can be carried out with this kind of lens because they are seldom lost and cannot injure the wearer. But loss may occur in the case of nautical sports or they can be spoiled by chemicals getting inside the lens. The disadvantages are that they can be broken or torn apart if too old. Soft lenses must be changed regularly because the physiological changes of the cornea may not manifest themselves very obviously. Soft lenses can correct every kind of optical defects, myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism, presbyopia. They can give your eyes a new colour or reinforce their brightness.
