SOFT CONTACT LENSES

  Extended-wear contact lenses:

For many myopic consumer - tempted by laser surgery but squeamish about the procedure - extended-wear contact lenses seem to offer the ideal solution. They particularly suited, to busy and active consumers with parameters from -1 to -6, who are tired of wearing spectacles and unhappy with lens-cleaning regimes.
These consumers may even find the routine of inserting and removing daily disposable contact lenses a chore.

For all its convenience, the extended-wear lens has had to overcome a certain amount of bad press. The first examples of this lens, launched in the '80s, caused some user to complain of sore and red eyes. Since then, however, great leaps in contact lens technology have given birth to a new generation of materials that offer much higher oxygen transmissibility and whose performance in clinical tests has been excellent.
Despite this, the 1999 launch of extended-wear contact lenses was dogged by adverse media coverage.

At one stage, the negative publicity was such that CIBA Vision in the UK issued special advice to opticians on how to deal with questions from anxious consumer.

This is where the practitioner has a vital role to play in reassuring nervous consumer that extended-wear really is the right choice for their busy lifestyles, it's worth remembering that, according to research commissioned by Bausch & Lomb, more than two in three contact-lens consumer would "definitely" or "probably" buy a continuous-wear lens when recommended by an eye care professional.

CIBA Vision's Night and Day contact lenses are designed to be worn continuously for 30 days and nights and, with a Dk. of 175, according to the manufacturer, deliver six rimes more oxygen to the eye than standard lenses. This rate of oxygen transmissibility is 40% bigber than the levels recommended to maintain healthy eyes in extended wear according to clinical research from Harvitt Bonanno of the American Academy of Optometry (1998).

Revolution

Like our bodies, the cornea also needs oxygen. When our eyes are pen, even if we are wearing contact lenses, it is easy to obtain a sufficient amount of oxygen, but when we are asleep, with our eyelids closed, oxygenation is reduced to a third only.

Until recently sleeping with contact lenses on had created another barrier to the flow of oxygen to the eye, but things have now changed because non-stop-wear 30-day, 24-hour contact lenses are now available.

They are Focus Night & Day from Ciba Vision (Basle, Switzerland) and Pure Vision produced by Bausch & Lomb: both products have won the approval of the Food & Drug Administration.

A recent research study showed that, for safe use during sleep, contact lenses must be able to transmit oxygen to at least 125 Dk. While ordinary contact lenses have a reduced transmission of oxygen of about 25-35 Dk, Focus Day & Night lenses have a transmission of 175 Dk. But this is not all. Compared to normal disposable contact lenses, they enable up to 6 times more oxygen to reach the eye.

These lenses are ideal for the correction of visual defects such as myopia and hypermetropia and are available in two base curves of 8.6 and 8.4mm. Dioptric powers range from +0.25D to +6.00D in intervals of 0.25D, from -0.25D to -8.00D in intervals of 0.25D and from 8.50D to -10.00 (in intervals of 0.50D).
