HARD CONTACT LENSES

ard contact lenses are divided into scleral lenses and corneal lenses.
Scleral lenses have a large diameter and cover nearly all the lower part of the
eye. They
are hardly used any more except for under water diving or for physiological research on
the eye. Corneal lenses cover only part of the cornea and come in different
sizes.
Hard corneal lenses are made of a rigid, scratchproof material, leave few deposits and do
not need a great deal of cleaning. The material does not get wet and is not gas
permeable.
The disadvantages are that they are felt by the eyelids and take some time to
get used to. There is a high loss risk and dust can get underneath the
lenses which must then be removed and rinsed. They are not suitable for violent
sports or sea sports.
